Born in the Austrian Alps
In 1931, a pharmacist and ski enthusiast at Maria Schutz Pharmacy created Labisan® to help climbers with cold sores. It quickly gained popularity and was trademarked internationally by 1936.
By 1990, stricter Austrian regulations led to the development of Labisan® med, available only in pharmacies. Maria Schutz Pharmacy also introduced Labisan® protective for everyday lip care. Today, Labisan® remains a trusted solution for cold sores.
Conquering Everest
In 1953, Labisan® played a crucial role in Sir Edmund Hillary’s legendary first ascent of Mount Everest, thanks to an English rep named Lawrie. Since then, it’s been a trusted companion for climbers tackling the world’s highest peaks, including Hermann Buhl during his first ascent of Nanga Parbat. From Everest to the Sahara, Labisan® has earned its place as an essential part of expedition gear.

Summits and Stories: A Mountaineering Odyssey with Labisan
In 1985, Reinhold Messner's team made history on Annapurna's 4,000-meter-high north-western wall, with Labisan® playing a crucial role, particularly for team member Luggi Rieser. In 1995, Theo Fritsche and Roland Mattle successfully summited Dhaulagiri (8167m) with Labisan®, proving its reliability in extreme conditions. During the 1998 Vorarlberg expedition to Makalu, Labisan® remained a steadfast companion despite adverse weather, captured in images taken at 6600m. These achievements underscore Labisan®'s enduring effectiveness in high-altitude expeditions.
